Humble Suggestion to Traffic Police Authorities - By Citizens of Pakistan

I am resident of Lahore; after having information about recent accidents in Lahore City right after one another; an opinion can easily be made that both Traffic and Military Police are failed to generate ample road safety awareness and sense of responsibility among the Citizen of Pakistan while driving; reasons are mentioned below (although citizens and / or drivers are equally responsible for accidents yet Traffic authorities can’t negate their duty of creating road safety awareness and sense of driving responsibility among citizens):

  1. People only abide by traffic rules when traffic police is present on the Signal. i.e. they are only afraid of Traffic Police Officers not the rules.
  2. Traffic Police officers always go for the easy target, they never chase the offender. They can never give challan to person who is authoritative and influential until he/ she himself / herself give consent in this regard.
  3. Traffic Police officer should educate the offender by identifying the mistake.
  4. Giving challan receipts to offender(s) is not the only solution however making him / her realize to abide by the rules in future is necessary.

Now a days it seems that challan targets are been assigned to the traffic police officers; in order to check if they are performing their duties or not ? In a result they tend to / used to challan the offenders on minute mistakes and in very strictly manner and thus accomplish the task / target of challan merely in an hour or so. After that for the rest of the day they don’t bother whether anyone abide by the traffic rules or not.

As I said; they (Traffic Police) always go for easy target. For example most of the time by giving challan receipt to person who doesn’t wear seat belt. It’s a wrong practice on ethical terms as traffic police officer can also instruct offender on the spot to wear seat belt and once he / she wears the seat belt, violation is erased / i.e no more violation. In this manner a police officer can not only earn respect & dignity in the eyes of offender / general public at large and even create a sense of responsibility among them.

In a nutshell, traffic authorities need to revisit their training and rules & policies and even implementation of the same to identify the loop holes and thus making things right . Hoping towards a progressive Pakistan.
